Beauty Standards in the Philippines 

For my community project, I will discuss the unrealistic beauty standards and ideals that automatically consider a woman 'attractive' in the Philippines as it is the community I belong to. I will talk about the two main beauty standards that cause the most consequences; Colorism and Fat Shaming. I will also talk about the harmful effects that these ideals have on women's self-esteem and the drastic measures they take to achieve these standards that have been normalized in Filipino Culture.  

Common Beauty Ideals 

Colorism

Colorism has always been a big problem not only in Asia but worldwide throughout history. Specifically, in East Asian countries, society prefers fairer skin tones more than darker ones. Geographically, the Philippines is located in an area where the people who live there have a natural brown/tan skin tone. Unfortunately, over time, society began to normalize, believing that lighter skin tones were seen as more attractive than their natural skin tone.

Along with colorism, weight discrimination is big issue that people everywhere face. However, the focus of this section will primarily be based on women.

Health & Self-Esteem

Although there are many beauty standards in Filipino culture, colorism, and weight discrimination are the two biggest standards that have the most consequences that impact your mental health. People go to extreme lengths to achieve these ideals that are generally unrealistic and unattainable. Trying to achieve these things will detrimentally affect both your physical and mental health.
